This is something we should definitely discuss in class.
ReplyDeleteMy initial response is to ask whether the negative reactions to the UM Church ad campaign are really directed at the UM Church or a Christianity in general. Too many people feel that there is no place for them in church--some with good reason. Therefore, any effort by any mainstream denomination is viewed a suspect. Unfortunately, I've been there and done that.
It took a long time for me to realize that the UM Church is a place where diversity is celebrated and divergent ideas are openly discussed. Whenever I get a chance, I make this point. I often get, "Yes, but you Methodists believe in everything and nothing at the same time."
I smile and say that I don't have all the answers and that I am suspect of those who say they do. It's not a very good slogan, but it's the best I've got.
