We've completed the first step in the school supply project process . . .

Ardith, Ron, and Leanne,

The 21st Time Class at the Satanta United Methodist Church is working on a plan to give USD 507 classroom teachers school supplies for the upcoming school year. For ease and convenience, our proposal is that (rather than providing individual students with supplies) we will provide each grade division at the elementary school a tote of supplies from the list that the district provides to be shared between teachers at that level with special considerations being made for certified staff members who are not classroom teachers. The JH-HS building would, instead, be given one large tote for the supply room containing the items most commonly needed by teachers in that building. The idea is that with these supplies classroom teachers could supplement the items that their students bring not just at the beginning of the year but throughout the school year.

Of course, we need your permission to embark on this project before we begin the process of creating the totes, and (should you agree to allow us to do this project) we'd like to have an early copy of the grade school supply list so that we can ensure that we purchase items that teachers specifically asked for.

Please let us know if this project is something that you would be in favor of.

Thanks,

Ryan

Class notes for June 27

We've begun the process of inviting people to our July 10 pool party. We have several left-over invites, so if you can think of someone to ask who might interested in joining the 21st Time, please take an invite from our classroom. The pool party will run from 6:00 to 7:00, and we will have two lifeguards on duty, which allows us up to 40 swimmers. If you plan to attend, please bring something to snack on and/or something to drink that so we can share with our guests.

We also discussed the school supply project, and the consensus seems to be that we will simply supply each of the grade levels at the grade school with a tub filled with extra supplies from the USD 507 school supply list. The JH-HS building will get a tub (or two) to be placed in the supply room. Ryan will get the school-supply list from Nancy and will work with Karen and Rachel to determine what supplies are most needed at the JH-HS. In the process, Ryan will also seek permission for this project from USD 507. We will need to discuss funding for this project at some point in the near future. Cash donations from our congregation would probably be best, but we may want a novel way of seeking those donations.

As far as long-term plans go, it will soon be time for a grand re-opening of the MAM room. We have discussed serving a light meal for both our donors and those who use our food bank. Jim Shearman as expressed some interest in doing some renovations to the MAM room before it re-opens. We'll want to get more details on this possibility.

Finally, Mark has floated the idea of having a coat drive this fall. Perhaps we could call it the "Coats of Many Colors" campaign.

Learn and Play Program Begins

Stephanie and Stacey's commitment to early-childhood development is something that should not go unrecognized. Building on the success of the playground equipment, these two remarkable ladies have secured a $5,000 Smart Start grant to bring the Learn and Play program to Satanta.

The program, designed to teach parents how to engage in activities that focus on the development of their children, had its first meeting at the park across the street from the Methodist church on June 10. Several children were in attendance along with many early-childhood experts.

The next meeting will be held on July 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the park and will feature sun, sand, and water. Please help to spread the word so that we can reach even more children in our community.

My Jesus

Heard this song in Hays and immediately thought of Mark. I think he should sing it!

Garage Sale Report

Early estimates indicate that the Satanta United Methodist Church garage sale generated somewhere in the neighborhood of $850, marking significant progress in generating the church's $1,500 grant match for the $5,000 Learn and Play grant (for early childhood development) that Stephanie Frank and Stacey King are bringing to Satanta. Thanks to all who donated and/or bought items.

Update

It would appear that a June water party is going to be difficult to schedule, so we are now looking at having something on July 10. This date is the Saturday before church in the park, so it would be a great time to invite those who might be interested in joining our ranks. Start a list of potential invitees!

Garage sale preparations are well underway. Ryan, Karen, Julie, Mendy, and an assortment of children all worked to get the Community Building packed to the brim with goods ranging from potty chairs to Christmas wreaths. Austin and Sam worked right alongside use earning money to attend Ray McElroy's football camp next week.

More items continue to arrive, so check Facebook for more opportunities to serve. We'll raise that $1,500. I just know it. Speaking of the Learn and Play, Stephanie and Stacey are working on a kick-off event in Methodist Park on Saturday, June 19 from 10:00 to 11:00 in the morning. I am sure they'll let us know what they need us to do.

Great things are happening, and it feels good to be a part of something that shares God's grace with everyone.

Potential Date for 21st Time Water Celebration?

We've accomplished a lot in recent months. Our Sunday Night Live show was a great success, and members our class are, once again, working to impact the lives of children by bringing the Learn and Play program to our community. It's time to celebrate us.

The Gardners will be back for a visit in June, so I was looking at water party (with the giant slide, of course) at our house on Saturday, June 19. We could meet for an early-afternoon luau and kick back and relax. The question is, "Is this a good date?" Summer can be a VERY busy time. Let me know what you're thinking.

Our Condolences

We received news today that Rachel's grandfather passed away after a long battle with cancer. I know that you will all want to do something as a group to express our sympathy. Let's put our heads together and generate some ideas on how we might comfort Rachel and her family, as well as Rick and Nancy, during this time of grief.
